Agnes was born May 24, 1924 in rural Utica, SD to William and Annie (Rolfs) Steensma. She attended Fishbeck Rural School, Utica High School and graduated from Yankton High School in 1942. After graduation she went to Washington, D.C. and worked for the Foreign Economic Administration, the District of Unemployment Compensation Board and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. On July 14, 1945 she married Albert Gamiere who was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. In December of 1945 she was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. In 1947 she and Albert separated and she continued working for the government in Washington, D.C. until 1973 when she and Albert remarried and moved to California where he was working for Hughes Aircraft Corp. After their retirement in 1979 they moved to South Dakota and resided at her old home place near Utica, SD for 8 years when they moved to Yankton, SD Albert passed away in March of 1995.
Agnes was an active member St. Benedict Catholic Church and was a Secular Discalced Carmelite. She volunteered at Sacred Heart Hospital and for many years at the House of Mary Shrine, was a member of the St. Isidore Circle and other organizations too numerous to mention.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father as well as her brother Bernard and her half-sister Blanche Sedlak. Survivors include close cousins from the Rolf’s family, the Steensma family as well as Albert’s relatives.
