Diane June Knodel, age 72, of Menno, SD, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, after a life defined by resilience, love, and quiet strength.
Born on June 6, 1953 in Menno, SD to Hugo and Annetta (Kalwat), Diane grew up with a deep appreciation for family and simple joys. She dedicated much of her early life to raising her children and then went on to work as an optical technician. As a stay-at-home mother, she found purpose and pride in caring for her family, whether it be cooking warm meals, baking sweet treats, working on crafts, and finding beauty in life’s small moments.
Diane was known for her quiet strength, encouragement, and the way she always cheered others on. Whether it was her children, her grandchildren, or a friend facing a challenge, she was there to offer kind words, quiet advice, or simply her listening ear. Her loved ones will remember her as someone who always found the good in others and celebrated their achievements with genuine joy.
Her greatest delight came from being a grandmother. Her grandchildren brought her endless pride, laughter, and love. She rarely missed an opportunity to share their stories, boast about their milestones, or remind them how deeply she believed in them. Even during times of illness, her face lit up when she spoke of them, and her love for her family remained her greatest comfort.
Life brought its share of challenges, but Diane met each with courage and faith. She remained strong-willed and independent, finding meaning in life’s quiet moments—through reading, caring for her beloved dog, keeping in touch with family, and finding peace in her faith.
She is survived by her three children Amy (Jeff) Phillipy of Columbia, SC; Lee (Heidi) Ritter of San Antonio, TX; and Lucas (Kaylynn) Ritter of Fairbanks, AK; along with her two grandchildren Sophia and Jaxon Phillipy; brother Howard (Mary) Knodel of Menno, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Hugo and Annetta Knodel; brother Elmer Knodel; and brother Myron Knodel.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on November 11, 2025 at the Menno Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend and share memories of her life.
Her love, encouragement, and strength will continue to live on through her family—especially her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
