Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery with military honors provided by the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post 183, Sons of the American Legion and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30 AM on Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor. Arrangements are under the direction of the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota.

Donald Edward Mudloff was born on February 4, 1939, to Albert Jr. and Marie (Rada) Mudloff on the family farm just west of Tabor, SD. He attended school through the eighth grade and then worked on the family farm when his father suffered a health crisis. In 1956, Don joined the United States Army Reserves and was stationed in Maryland for six months. He was honorably discharged in May of 1957.

Don was united in marriage to Emily Sedlacek on September 9, 1958 at the Vodnany Church. They lived their entire married lives in the Tabor area, including 58 years in the little house on Hakl Street. Together they had six children: Sharon (Terry) Myers of Sioux Falls; Vicki (Rod) McGill, Stuart of Oklahoma; Don Jr. (Claudia) of El Paso, Texas; Linda Schwab of Sioux Falls; Jacki Wyatt of Sioux Falls; and Sandy (Dave) Dahlke of Sioux Falls.

In his younger years, Don worked road construction as a heavy equipment operator which kept him away from home for weeks at a time. During the winter months, he ran a small repair business from his shop next to the house. When the family farm became available for purchase, he bought a portion of it and started farming again for several years.

Don will be remembered for his love of attending auction sales and his talent for finding a good deal. Over the years, he accumulated enough treasures that he eventulally held quite a few “inventory reduction” sales of his own. He also loved going to town for a cup of coffee or tea and catching up on the lastest news and neighborhood gossip and never turned down a game of cards. Pinochle was his favorite. Family and friends often joked he sat in the lucky chair, but it made no difference what chair he sat in!

He was a long-time member of the Yankton Scramblers Motorcycle Club, the Old Iron Club, and a 25-year member of the American Legion.

After Emily’s death in 2016, Don met Darlene Holec. They enjoyed many years of companionship, going out and about and playing cards with family and friends. He became a cherished member of her family as well.

In 2023, Don was diagnosed with cancer and moved to the Springfield Assisted Living Center. While there, he developed many special relationships with some of the residents and staff for which we are forever grateful.

Don is survived by his six children; 11 grandchlidren; nine great grandchildren; sisters: Joan (Louie Jr.) Sedlacek and Marie Mogck; brother, David Mudloff; and in-laws: Richard & Karen Sedlacek, Joe Sedlacek Sr., Dennis & Irene Reiner, and Kenny Pietz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily; parents Albert Jr. and Marie Mudloff; his parents-in-law, Louis Sr. and Clara Sedlacek; sister, Rosemary Beuckens; in-laws: Fran Beuckens, Kathy Mudloff, John Mogck, Robert & Arline Sedlacek, Jane Sedlacek, and Charlene Pietz; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the many medical staff who showed Don kindness and compassion the past ten years. Your care helped make his journey easier and brought comfort to Don.
