DuWayne B. Obr age 84, of Yankton, SD passed away Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. Dave Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in the Tyndall Presbyterian Cemetery, Tyndall, SD at approximately 1:15 PM with Military Graveside Rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 Honor Guard and the SDARNG Honor Guard Tuesday afternoon. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Monday, May 4, 2015 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with Scripture service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
DuWayne Obr was born in Murdo, SD to Frank and Mary (Pluta) Obr on September 10, 1930. DuWayne went to grade school at the Yankton Modeling School and then attended Yankton High School where he graduated in 1949. While attending high school, he enlisted into the National Guard where he served his country for 11 years. He served in the 196th RCT as a Sergeant. He transferred to the 115 Signal STP and then to the 85th Engineer Battalion.
In 1947 DuWayne met the love of his life, Marillyn Lowe and were married three years later on May 14, 1951. Their marriage ceremony was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton, SD. Right after their wedding they moved to Colorado Springs, CO where DuWayne was stationed. After DuWayne was discharged from the service, they moved back to the Yankton area to start their family.
Between the years of 1953 and 1960 they welcomed four children into their lives: Mary, Steve, Cindy and Tim. DuWayne's pride and joy was his kids and grandkids, but he was also well known for his work ethic. He was employed at the United States Post Office for 36 years and retired in 1996 at the age of 60.
While he was here with us, DuWayne not only loved to spend time with his family, but he also loved playing cards, dominos, bingo, bowling, fishing and hunting. In DuWayne's later years his focus was always on his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. DuWayne always looked forward to attending basketball games, bowling games, concerts and many other activities. He was so proud of his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments and shared them proudly. DuWayne was loved by many and is missed by all.
DuWayne is survived by his wife, Marillyn Obr of 63 years; four children: Mary (Joe) Cummins of Casper,WY, Steve (Luette) Obr of Yankton, SD, Cindy (Dennis) Schumacher of Crofton, NE, and Tim (Lori) Obr of Hudson, WI; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brother, Larry (Grace) Obr of Roberts, TX; cousins and many nieces and nephews.
DuWayne was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Obr, aunts and uncles and other family members and friends.
