Hulda Mensch

November 30, 1923 — January 7, 2017

Hulda (Kirschenman) Mensch was born February 5th 1924, in Menno, S.D. to Theobald (T.H.) and Alma (Oswald) Kirschenman. Hulda was baptized October 26, 1924 by Reverend Rittershaus and confirmed June 26, 1938 by Reverend Bodenman at Salem Reformed Church, Menno, SD. Hulda married LaVerne Mensch on September 3, 1944 and to this union two children were born, a son, Roger Mensch and a daughter, Judy VonEye. They raised their family and farmed east of Menno. Hulda loved sharing her stories back in the day, especially when she was younger and worked at her father’s implement dealership. Hulda was a hard worker and enjoyed life on the farm. Later in life after moving into Menno, she enjoyed all of her flowers and gardening with LaVerne. She loved shopping and her closets were always packed full with sacks of clothes and various items for her grandchildren to grow into. Hulda always made you feel welcome in her home for the holidays or just a visit. A hot meal to fill your belly as well as a dessert. She frequently had a bag of goodies for you to take home. Hulda and her husband traveled in their later years, taking bus tours across the country. After losing LaVerne in 2011, Hulda resided in her beloved home for one more year. Due to circumstances, she moved in the Menno / Olivet Care Center for the next 5 years. She enjoyed visiting with friends and cherished the moments when grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren visited. She also enjoyed her many conversations with Pastor Mike. One can never forget her favorite foods of Nookala soup, Fleischkuekle and Kuchen. Grandma will always be remembered for a big heart and her spunky and witty personality. She leaves behind a brother, Leo Kirschenman of Yankton S.D; sisters, Linda Mueller of Scotland (formally Yankton S.D) and Ruth Cummings of Denver, CO; 4 grandchildren: Angela Ackerman of St. Joseph, MO, Vickie Mensch-Geuther of Volin, S.D, Connie Spielmann (husband Tom) of Sioux Falls. S.D. and Curtis Mensch (wife Karla) of Ft. Campbell KY; 10 great grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Norma Kirschenman. Hulda was preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne, son, Roger, daughter, Judy VonEye, sister, Annetta Mass and brothers, Ruben, Rudy and Melvin Kirschenman.
