After high school, James attended Creighton University where he graduated with a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1966. He also served his country serving two years in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Tinker Air Force base hospital in Oklahoma.

Jim married the love of his life, Janell Becker on July 8, 1967. The couple returned to Yankton in 1968 where he joined his father, Joseph M. Hohn in his dental practice. Jim and Janell had one son, Jeff, who was born in Yankton in 1969.

Jim fulfilled one of his life-long dreams, traveling to Europe with his brother to see the beaches of Normandy and other WWII sights on the 65th anniversary of D-Day. Jim was an avid sports fan. He loved to cheer for his alma mater Creighton Blue Jays, the Wisconsin Badgers and of course, the Bucks, Gazelles and USD Coyotes.

His greatest joy in his later years was spending time in Wisconsin with his son Jeff, daughter-in-law Alicia, and his only grandchild, Conner.

James is survived by his son, Jeff and his wife, Alicia of Stevens Point, WI and their son, Conner; his brother, John of North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.
