James “Jim” B. Sattler, age 77 of Menno, SD passed away Thursday, January 1, 2026 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital surrounded by family in Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be 10:30 am, Friday, January 9, 2026 at Salem Reformed Church, Menno, SD with Rev. Michael Hecht officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 7 pm, Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Salem Reformed Church, Menno, SD with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. The Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the service details. Online condolences may be sent at: www.okfhc.com. Jim was born in Scotland, SD on April 27, 1948 to Arthur and Lois (Oliver) Sattler. He was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church and confirmed in 1961 in the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, SD.
Jim was a teacher and coach for over 40 years. He was active in the community and many athletic organizations in South Dakota including South Dakota High School Football Coaches Association, South Dakota Baseball Coaches Association, South Dakota Track and Field Coaches Association, Menno Athletic Club, Menno School Board, Menno Community Club, Bus driver for 12 years, and Deacon of Salem Reformed Church.
He was very proud of the South Dakota High School Track Coach of the Year Awards in 1990 and 1996 and the nomination for the National Track Coach of the Year in 1999 (one of 8 nominees across the US).
On February 24, 1969 he was united in marriage to Donna Berndt in Avon, South Dakota. They were blessed with two sons, Tom and Kent.
Jim and Donna have kept active in their retirement by attending their grandchildren’s sporting events. Jim’s favorite role was being a loving and proud grandfather.
Jim is survived by his wife Donna and his sons Thomas (Summer), Menno and Kent (Tracy), Tea. Eight grandchildren Brayden Sattler, Bryce Sattler, Branson Sattler, Kellen Sattler, Klayton Sattler, Kolt Sattler, Skyler Heckenlaible and Grace Heckenlaible. Brother Robert Sattler, Parker. Brothers-in-law LeRoy Berndt and Roger Berndt both of Sioux Falls. Sister-in-law Gladys (John) Talsma, Running Water. In addition he leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Lois Sattler, his mother and father-in-law Leslie and Edna Berndt, sister-in-law Charlaine Sattler, and brother-in-law Leonard Berndt.
There are no words to express how blessed we are for all the prayers, calls and words the family has received.
