Joe Carda was born December 15, 1956, in Hot Springs, South Dakota. He was the son of Alfreda “Fritzy” and Jim Carda and grew up in Tabor, South Dakota, where he formed the foundation of his strong values, work ethic, and deep appreciation for family and community.
Through his first marriage, Joe welcomed three children: Jamie, Jesse, and Jeremy. His family grew even larger when he married the love of his life, Tammy (Ekroth), gaining five additional children whom he deeply loved as his own: Amanda, Daniel, Ashley, Cary, and Jacqueline Cooper. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, his children, and his grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Joe recently retired from his career at Mike Durfee State Prison where he served as a dedicated drug and alcohol counselor. His work touched the lives of many, and he was especially proud of the individuals he helped guide toward better paths.
Outside of work, Joe embraced life wholeheartedly. He loved hunting, cheering on Nebraska Cornhusker football, and spending time with those closest to him. Whether sharing stories, laughter, or simply a cold beer with friends, Joe understood the true value of connection. His passion for life, his generous spirit, and his ability to make every person feel welcome will be deeply missed.
Joe’s legacy lives on in the family he deeply adored and in the countless lives he influenced along his journey.
