Larry Red Wing, age 72, of Santee, NE passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at the Lake Andes Senior Living Center, Lake Andes, SD. Larry’s wake service will begin at 1:00 pm, Friday, May 22, 2026 at the Oyate Oyake Community Center in Santee, Nebraska. Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, May 23, 2026 at the Oyate Oyake Community Center in Santee. Burial will be at the Hobu Creek Cemetery in Lindy, Nebraska. Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home of Yankton is assisting the family with arrangements.
Larry Redwing, son of Alex and Bernice Redwing was born September14, 1953 in Sioux City, lowa.
Larry was a proud tribal member of the Santee Sioux Nation. He attended school in Platville, Wisconsin and graduated from Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, SD. Larry earned an associate degree from Sinte Gleska Tribal College and worked towards a Bachelor's Degree at Wayne State College. Unfortunately, he had to halt his college studies to gain employment.
During his lifetime, grew up camping and fishing. He was a chef at the well-known Paddock Steak House in South Sioux City, Nebraska, a Tribal Headstart Teacher, a Food/Beverage, Cage Cashier and Guest Services employee at the Ohiya Casino Resort. His declining health would prevent his further employment. He was born a natural animal lover and was known to always have a half-dozen dogs at his side; They were his constant, loyal companions.
His proud life moments included supporting the American Indian Movement (AIM) during the mid-1970's wherein the mission and purpose was equal human rights for Native American Indigenous people of this continent. During the Dakota/MN-USA war in 1862, the USA conducted the largest mass execution of 38+ 2 Dakota Warriors in USA history. Larry is a direct descendant of the Mdewankanton Dakota Warrior, Dowansa, who was publicly executed in Mankato, MN in December 1862. Larry never missed attending the annal Tribal Memorial Ceremonies held each December in Santee, NE for the courageous Dakota Warriors.
Larry is survived by brother Ron Redwing, his Hunka son Wakan Petite, sisters Pat Redwing Halstead, Thelma Thomas and all of Lucy Redwings' entire Hupahuduta Tiospaye. Larry was preceded by his loving parents, Alex and Bernice Redwing and his beloved Kunsi Lucy Redwing.
