Leona R. Pechous, age 88 of Springfield Assisted Living Center and Tyndall Good Samaritan Center for a short time, passed away Wednesday, January 04, 2017 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice, Yankton, SD.

Leona was born July 12, 1928 in Bon Homme County to Joseph and Mary “Mamie” (Bouska) Carda. She graduated from Tabor High School and was employed at Cimpl’s Market. Leona married Sanford Pechous on October 19, 1948 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD and to this union four children were born. Leona helped her husband on the farm milking cows by hand, raising ducks, chickens, livestock and gardening. When they moved to Yankton, she cleaned homes and offices for 15 years.

Leona was a lifetime member of the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Czech Heritage. She loved to dance to polka music with her husband, Sanford, playing cards, visiting with friends and loved family get-togethers.

Leona is survived by her daughters: Rebecca Fryda of Springfield, SD and Cynthia (Nick) Buechler of Colorado Springs, CO; sons, Richard (Kris) Pechous of Tabor, SD and Robert (Nancy) Pechous of Tabor, SD; grandchildren: David Fryda (special friend, Brenda Beran) and Lisa Fryda, (fiancé, Scott Rostek), Chris (Kim), Jason and Scott (Monica) Buechler, Michael (Angie) and Corey (Nicole) Pechous, Jacquie Schneider, Justin (Josie), Kyle (Erin) and Jennifer Pechous (special friend, Jared Lynch)¬¬¬; great-grandchildren: Jacob, Ben, Mary, Jack and Ari Buechler, Taylor Steineke, Miyah and Jordan Pechous, Dommonick Pechous, Weston Pechous, Catelynn Camarena, Gracie and Georja Pechous and Blake and Olivia Pechous and sister, Margaret Burfeindt of Avon, SD.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Sanford, her parents, her four brothers: Leonard, Steve, Laddie and Jimmie Carda and son-in-law, D. J. Fryda
