Margarethe "Margo" Larson, died peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2014 in Menno, South Dakota. She was born Friday, October 13, 1922 in Lawrence, Washington to her father and mother, Olaf and Sigrid (Greibrok) Borge. In 1924, she and her family moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin where she lived until college.
Margo graduated from Augustana Academy and Saint Olaf College. After college she received her Master's degree from Western Reserve Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.
Margo met Mearl Larson at Augustana Academy. Their friendship developed over the years, and they married August 31, 1948 at East Koshkonong Lutheran Church near Cambridge, Wisconsin. Margo and Mearl settled on Twin Brook Farm south of Menno. From 1949 until 1962 she gave birth to six children: Peter, Timothy, Naomi, Stephen, Rachel and Andrew.
She was a devoted mother, excellent gardener, and a steadfast provider for her family.
Margo was a registered nurse and worked for many years at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. Over the years she worked in many nursing capacities including intensive care and mental health. She completed her career at Freeman Nursing Home.
In her retirement Margo became well known in the local area for her homemade bread, granola and lefse. She served in all ways imaginable in the church making quilts, leading bible studies, advocating for prison ministries and working to end racism.
In their later years, Margo and Mearl continued their active involvement in and generous support of Our Savior's Church. During Mearl's last years Margo was his constant companion and caregiver until he died on July 28, 2005. Survivors are her children: Pete, Tim (Marti), Naomi, Steve, Rachel (Don Holmstrom), and Andy (Betsy); grandchildren, Terry (Sue) Bitsos, Tammy (Loren) Lockman, Lisa Benski and step-grandson Thomas Bitsos, Nathan Grega Larson, Susanna Larson Holmstrom, Mark and Anna Larson; great-grand children Zara Bitsos, Trevor, Josh and Nathaniel Lockman and many faithful friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband, Mearl.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 4. 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, rural Menno. Burial will be in the Our Savior's East Cemetery, rural Menno. Visitation is on Thursday, April 3, 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Aisenbrey Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno and one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, rural Menno or St. Dysmas of South Dakota or a charity of your choice.
