Mariette (Haar) Rames was born January 12th, 1924, to Gottlob and Mamie (Eaton) Haar in Olivet, SD, the youngest of seven children. She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman and confirmed in March 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Menno.
Mariette graduated from Olivet High School in 1942. As a high school student, she was active in cheerleading and declam, along with being chosen to be the carnival queen.
After graduating from high school, Mariette worked at Haar Abstract in Olivet with her dad and her sister Ruth.
Mariette married Earl Rames, her grade school sweetheart, on October 26, 1945. To this union, Mark William and Trudi Ann were born.
Mariette and Earl settled just east of Olivet on the home farm. They lived in the chicken coop for a short time while their house was being built. Mariette milked cows and tended her chickens, in addition to helping Earl on the farm when needed. She didn’t like to cook or bake, but she loved to clean and organize, a trait she passed on to Trudi and granddaughter Breanne.
Mariette lived her faith and knew her Lord. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran, Mariette was active in Couples Club, Ladies Aid, and choir. She served as a Sunday School teacher and helped with various update projects and fundraisers.
Mariette loved to sew and make crafts. She spoiled her grandkids and great grandkids while making clever crafts and playing games with them. She also had fun on outings to Sioux Falls with her sisters, Ruth and Gertrude, and her niece Myra Deters.
Earl and Mariette loved to travel and saw many sights over the years, including Scandinavian countries. They traveled to Europe with a group from South Dakota.
Mariette’s family who will forever remember her countless gifts of love include her children Mark (Peg) Rames of Olivet and Trudi (Mark) Shaeffer of Menno; her grandchildren Brent (Ann) Rames of Menno, Blair (Bryce) Magill of Tekamah, NE, and Breanne (Kurt) of Sioux Falls, , step grandsons Brad (Tanya) Schaeffer of Parker, Daniel (Nicole) Schaeffer of Olivet, and Luke (Desiree) Schaeffer of Mankato, MN; 19 great grandchildren; and a special niece, Glenda Haar Hood.
Mariette was preceded in death by her parents; Earl, her husband of 58 years; two infant sisters, Emma and Dorothea; brothers Harold Haar and Howard Haar; sisters Ruth Michel and Gertrude Bowers; sisters-in-law Nellie Haar and Gladys Haar; and brothers- in-law Lynn Michael and Earl Bowers.
