Marlene Streyle

Marlene Streyle, age 80, of Yankton, formerly of Menno, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton. Visitation will be Monday, August 31 from 5:00-7:00 pm with a 7:00 prayer service at Zion Reformed Church in Menno. Marlene’s funeral service will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, September 1, at Zion Reformed Church in Menno with Rev. Travis Grassmid officiating. Burial will be at the Delmont City Cemetery in Delmont, SD. Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel of Menno is assisting the family with arrangements.

Marlene Marlys (Bitterman) Streyle was born March 13,1946 in Parkston, SD to Theophil and Minnie (Renner) Bitterman. Marlene was baptized and confirmed in the Pilgrim Congregational Church, in Tripp, SD. She attended country school until the 8th grade.

On September 22, 1974, she married Maynard Streyle. During her life, Marlene cared for her children and family. Once the kids started attending school she was employed at the Menno Locker, waitressed at the Menno Livestock Café and later at the Open Door Café. She also worked at the Hutchinson County Courthouse as a part-time custodian and later provided daycare for local families.

Marlene was a member of the Zion Reformed Church of Menno where she served as a Sunday school teacher and chairman/co-chairman of her ladies group. Marlene enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, canning vegetables, cooking food, especially German food, and baking kuchen. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved spending time with them if it be attending dance recitals, sporting events, them coming for visits or just being asked to “babysit”.

Survivors include three children and several grandchildren: daughter Denise (Scott) Mostek (Caitlyn, Carter and Camden) of Wayne, NE, son Jason (Tara) Streyle (Katelynn and Cody) of Alcester, SD, son James (Jalynne) Streyle (Parker and Kaylee) of Scotland, SD, sisters Delores Schmidt of Mitchell, SD, Betty Hieb of Sioux Falls, SD, brother Dennis Bitterman (special friend Mary Lou Hoff) of Tripp, SD, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Theophil and Minnie, infant sister Wilhelmina, sister Darlene, brothers-in-law, Marlin Buchman, Maynard Schmidt, and Ernest Hieb, her grandparents, aunts and uncles.
