Mary Jane Henderson, 94, of Springfield, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026 surrounded by her family. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting with her details. Online condolences may be sent at: www.okfhc.com.
Mary Jane Hatwan was born on October 17, 1931, in Tabor, SD In 1949 she graduated from Springfield High School, where she met David Henderson. They both attended Southern State Teacher’s College where Jane obtained her teaching degree. She and David were married in June 1951 and shared 69 beautiful years together until David’s passing in 2020.
Jane worked as a teacher and bookkeeper, bringing dedication and care to everything she did. She enjoyed traveling, camping with Dave in their RV, spending time with her kids and grandchildren. She loved playing cards and Mahjong, beating anyone she could at Scrabble, and tackling the latest crossword. Jane will be remembered as a giving and loving person with a witty sense of humor and a generosity that impacted all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Henderson; her parents, Stephen and Jeanette Hatwan; and son-in-law Jim Furlong.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Colleen Furlong (John Groves) of Bokeelia, FL; son, Bruce Henderson (Lorrie) of Sturgis, SD; seven loving grandchildren, and her five adorable great-grandchildren.
Jane will be remembered for her wittiness, her lifelong commitment to family and the kindness she showed to all.
Per Jane’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. A private family burial will take place at Springfield Cemetery at a later date.
