Peggy Ann Bierle was born in Yankton on August 9, 1941 to Adolph and Evelyn (Vanorny) Bierle. She was baptized on September 14, 1941 at Martinis Lutheran Church, Utica, SD. She attended grade school at McKinley School, graduating from Scotland High School in 1959. Peggy earned her teaching certificate from Southern State, Springfield, SD in 1967. She taught for four years between North Star School & Lesterville School until leaving when she started her family. She then spent the next 27 years as an office assistant for the Lesterville Co-op, where she was known for her warm smile and kind heart.

Peggy married Albert Munkvold on August 10, 1963, beginning a lifelong partnership centered on love, faith, and family. Together, Peggy and Albert built a loving home and were blessed with six children. Their greatest joy was raising their children. Peggy and Albert were known for hosting unexpected gatherings at their house after Lesterville dances held at the Community Hall. She cooked the best late-night breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast. Their house was filled with family and friends which created fun, laughter, and lasting memories for everyone in the Lesterville community.

Shortly after Albert’s death in 2000, Peggy owned and operated the Broncs Cafe in Lesterville for over 10 years with Delores Kokes as a co-owner for the first few years. The Broncs Café was a local gathering spot where Peggy was able to continue to serve her community.

Peggy loved to play cards with anyone and everyone. She was one of the Lesterville Broncs biggest fans and quite possibly their loudest. She had a special parking spot, and everyone knew exactly where you could find her on game day. You could hear her honking after every great play and hollering at the umpires after any questionable call. It became part of the game day experience and something the community of Lesterville will never forget. Peggy especially loved giving the opposing teams a hard time. Her famous one-liners like “Rooster Party!”, “Uh oh they are scared of ya!” and “Annie, Annie, over!” could be heard ringing across the field. Just ask any opposing team; they’d be the first to tell you Peggy always made sure she was there.

Throughout her life, Peggy was known for her smile and contagious laugh. Peggy’s door was always open but more importantly, so was her heart. She welcomed many in, and some she lovingly raised as her own. (Keith and Randy Evenson)

Peggy is survived by her children Monty (Jane) Munkvold of Vermillion; Marty (Cheryl) Munkvold of Tea; Monica (Brian) Honkomp of Sheldon IA; Michelle (Andy) Kessler of Lesterville; Melissa (Eric) Johnson of Sioux Falls; and Matt (Laura) Munkvold of Lesterville. 16 grandchildren; Stacey (Tyson) Wharton, Phil (Brody) Munkvold; Abby (Joel) Gullickson, Evan Munkvold; Heather, Hannah, Hailey, and Brianna Honkomp; Trevor (Nicole) Munkvold, Courtney (Lance) VanMoer, Kylee (Tyler) Hollinsworth, Kaylee (Jake) Wiskur; Lauren and Lydia Johnson; Briggs and Brynnlee Munkvold and 9 great-grandchildren, Ayden and Katelyn Wharton; Evelyn & August Munkvold, Trace, Oliver & Sunny Hollinsworth, Carter Wiskur and Baby Jude Gullickson. She is also survived by her 3 siblings, Dan (Janice) Bierle of Lesterville, Daryl (Charlotte) Bierle of Lesterville and Mary (Ben) Lerssen of Sioux Falls and many nieces and nephews that she adored.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert, and numerous in laws.

One of Peggy’s favorite quotes was “You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.”
