Sylvia Redding, age 87, of Yankton, SD went to be with the Lord on Thursday March 06, 2014 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be in Eternal Hills Cemetery, Oceanside, CA at a later date. Visitations will be one hour prior at the funeral home.
Sylvia was born August 8th 1926 in North Bend Nebraska to Thomas L. Watchorn and Ruth Griffith (Watchorn). She was the only sister to five brothers: Glen, Walter, Kenneth, Ed and Ross Watchorn. After graduating from high school in Ponca, Nebraska, she went to work for Western Union in Washington D.C. She later moved to California with her brother Walter to work in his ice cream shop. There she met her husband Joseph H. Redding where they were blessed with four children. Sylvia and her husband Joseph owned and operated a trucking company for 30 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and doing such activities as organic gardening, award winning woodworking projects, camping and traveling to such exotic places as Jamaica and Hawaii. Sylvia was a kind hearted woman who had nothing but joy and love in her heart; inspiring the people around her. She also enjoyed connecting with her friends at the senior center playing bingo. She will be truly missed.
Family members who will always cherish her life include her brother Ed Watchorn (Betty) of Ponca, NE, Judith Whall (Frank) of Fallbrook, CA, Joseph Redding III (Sue) of Portland, OR, James Redding (Yolanda) Vista, CA, Joanne Branning (John) Volin, SD; followed by nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and her brothers Walter, Glen, Kenneth and Ross Watchorn.
