William J. "Bill" Kabeiseman, age 80, of Yankton, SD passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 27, 2013 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Bill was born in Yankton on April 21, 1933 to Leo and Katherine (Frick) Kabeiseman. He was baptized in the Catholic Church, attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Trinity High School (Sioux City), and graduated from Yankton High School as an all-state athlete in football and basketball. Bill was awarded both academic and football scholarships to attend St. Thomas College, St. Paul, MN, later transferring to the University of South Dakota to complete his B.S. and Masters in Physics/Mathematics. With his B.S. and Masters degrees in hand he continued his education at the University of Missouri - Rolla where he received his Ph. D. in Physics. Dr. Kabeiseman spent his 40-year career teaching Math and Physics at the University of South Dakota, chairing the Math department for a portion of that time. He married Rose Elaine Burgi December 28, 1955 in Yankton and to this union, they were blessed with two children, Michael and Kathleen. Countless hours were spent swimming at the pool and lake, and as swim-team boosters, they were presented the Ernie Gunderson Memorial Award for devotion to state competitive swimming. Bill and Rose played competitive duplicate bridge for 15 years, with Bill winning the North American Bridge Championship Master. He loved gardening and canning, spending his retirement years on the land he loved and grew up on, a knoll overlooking Lewis & Clark Lake. He cherished his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rose; children: Michael (and Barbara) Kabeiseman of Yankton, Kathy (and John Lee) Kabeiseman of Hawarden, IA; grand and step-grandchildren: Matthew (and Briana) Kabeiseman of Englewood, CO, Kathryn (and Jason) Crisp of Brandon, SD; Nicolette (and Spencer) Bose, Vince and Talia Wellenstein, of Yankton, and Josh Lee, of Sioux Falls; great and step-great grandchildren: Izley and Maxwell Kabeiseman, Jackson Crisp, Hunter, Landry, Keegin, and Allie Bose. He is also survived by two sisters: his twin, Betty (and Don) McDonald and Phyllis (and Frank) Mach; sisters-in-law: Ann Novotny and Leona Kabeiseman; brother-in-law: Paul Petrillo, and many nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his parents: Leo and Katherine Kabeiseman, brothers: Karl and John Kabeiseman, sisters: Reta Kabeiseman and Ruth Petrillo, brothers-in-law: Robert Novotny, Harold Withee and Pat Pike, and sister-in law: Betty Pike. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart School, 509 Capitol, Yankton, SD 57078.
